Those examples aren't the best. They sound like they were made up just to accommodate the use of "beyond recall", but they sound artificial. In the first sentence, for instance, it'd be more natural just to say: "We can't fix your laptop -- the screen is beyond REPAIR." In the second example, it's enough to say "It's too late to cancel our plans." <period!>
