Stupid Cupid you're a real mean guy
I'd like to clip your wings so you can't fly
I'm in love and it's a crying shame
And I know that you're the one to blame
Hey hey, set me free
Stupid Cupid stop picking on me!
Don't peek on me.

ON here refers to doing something that affects someone when they’re unaware. “I paid $5000 to get him out of jail and he left the country ON ME.”
"Я заплатил пять тысяч, чтобы вызволить его из тюрьмы, а он смылся из страны... What's next, Uly? That's not quite clear for me... I didn't know he wasn't in jail and he had left the country before I paid, right?
Ah, he must have paid me $5000 when he was back from jail, but he left?
No, you knew he wasn’t in jail anymore because you paid his bond. But when someone is out on bond, they have to stay in town until their trial. The person who pays their bond is responsible for them, so now you’re in trouble and you lost your money. I don’t know how to translate this into Russian except “behind my back” or “when I wasn’t looking” or just not at all. But in English, the ON ME means that it affects you: “Anna said she would wait for me forever when I went off to school in California. But I wasn’t gone three weeks and she got married on me.”
In this post, the speaker probably has a surprise for someone and doesn’t want them to look at it yet, or it will (affect them by) ruin the surprise.
Aha! Thank you, I would’ve never know. Could I say
You just change "за завесу" into "за занавеску." "За кулисы" is something specific, related to the theater.
Very cute! But in that case, you wouldn’t use ON ME because peeking wouldn’t hurt/offend/disappoint the teacher on a personal level. IF it was the boy’s birthday and she hid a cake in there, she could smile and say “Now don’t peek on me.” ON ME has the force of “come on, don’t do (something like) that to me”
I just realized that Grumbler had suggested it - I read his comment so fast the first time, I didn’t notice it. Thanks!
Uly, I got it now: "Я заплатил за него залог в пять тысяч, чтобы до суда его не отправили в тюрьму, а он смылся из страны."
Correct! And then you could follow that up with something like “How could he do that to me?!” Or “I can’t believe he’d do that to me!” to render the ON ME.
Denny, can you give the context you found this in?
But in that case, you wouldn't use ON ME...
.. and he left a country ON ME - ...
Для Иосифа: ON ME = ублюдок.
😁👍
😂
Uly...
Thank guys all of you)
И смотри мне,(come on, dont do that to me) не заглядывай!
ON isn’t emphatic, it turns the consequences of the action on you and makes you the “victim.” For instance, “don’t give up on me” can be interpreted in two ways depending on the context: (1) don’t lose hope in me; (2) don’t lose hope in yourself - I’m counting on you/I believe in you (=don’t do that to me/don’t let me down)
But I wasn't gone three weeks and she married on me - Но и трёх недель не прошло, как она ВЗЯЛА и вышла замуж. I think ВЗЯЛА И ВЫШЛА замуж conveys how much that affected the speaker unlike just вышла замуж.
Very good!
I am sorry that i couldn't answer right away. Actually i talked to Americans and they were making jokes about appearance of each other. And one of them said, ' oh come on, don't pick on me!' I thought that it sounded like ' don't peek on me', but i was just mistaken. Later they explained that to me that ' Don't pick on me means like don't mocking at me. And actually ' Don't peek on me' sounds weird, and correctly to say ' don't peek AT me'.
as if i spy on somebody.
Don't pick on me! ¿
Don’t pick on me - хорош придираться!
Thank you, Denny, that is correct - PEEK ON sounds extremely strange. We normally say PEEK AT.
