This means two things: (1) You need to shut up because you are very mistaken - what you just said is completely inaccurate [you need to back up like a car and not go any further because you're wrong] (=What the fuck did you say?); (2) You need to get out of my face because I'm about to start hitting you (=when you're arguing with someone and they're getting closer and closer to you).
Actually, (1) is more like "wait a minute - what did you say???" when you hear something that is infuriating or untrue, or "fighting words"
Or even, WHAT? Say that again! (I couldn’t believe my ears the first time)
A: Hi Andy! Long time no see. How’s life been treating you? B: Oh, I haven’t seen you in about five years. Where do I start? I started at the university as a teacher’s assistant and now I’m a professor, Madelyn now has a catering company, our oldest Amy got married last year, we lost Jimmy two years ago... A: What?? Back (the fuck) UP! Your little boy died???
No, it means “go back to what you said a second ago - I can’t believe my ears!”
Yes!
I suggested this 7 hours ago)))
Aha, Что! missed there. )))
There must be something in Russian that you say when someone is talking and they say something extremely shocking and you “hit the pause button” out of disbelief and have them repeat it to make sure you heard it correctly. Something like “just a moment! What was that???”
Bingo!
