We use this expression when someone is approaching an advanced age and (1) they haven't had any children, haven't gotten married, or haven't fulfilled some other important life event; or (2) if they're acting as if they were still in their 20s, or trying to convince others that they are younger than they actually are: (1) Of course I'm depressed! I'm pushing 50 and I still haven't met anyone, let alone had children. (2) It's not that I don't like her, I just think it's absolutely scandalous for a woman who's pushing 50 to be dating men who are old enough to be her son.

Да, old в этом случае значит не старый, а что-то вроде "в возрасте" (отвечает на вопрос "how old are they?")

Igor, if your translation implies that they're fit for their age, that's not what this means.

Значит, словари опять врут. Хотя по-русски мы тоже одинаково говорим: "Ты мне ПО ВОЗРАСТУ в сыновья/ в матери годишься."
В таких замечательных, как твои примеры, случаях мы говорим: "Мне скоро 50 СТУКНЕТ, а я никого так и не встретил, о детях я вообще молчу!"-или- "Не то чтобы она мне не нравится/ я против неё что-то имею, просто неслыханно/ возмутительно/ за гранью добра и зла, что женщина, которой скоро 50 СТУКНЕТ, встречается с мужчинами, которые ей в сыновья годятся.

Yeah, sometimes things we say don't make a lot of sense. It should be "young enough" to be her son, and you can say that too, but more people would say "old" enough for some reason:
