Jane, again we have the "emotive" perfect. You have to imagine someone walking into a gallery, taking one look at a piece, putting their hands to their face and slowly and dramatically stating: "Who has created this wonderful work of art!??" as if they can't believe their eyes and don't need to look any further. I don't know if it would be accurate, but maybe something like кто же создал вот это замечательное творение искусства!??" would come close. Whenever you look at an exclamation or question that would normally be uttered using the simple past, but has the perfect, always ask yourself why.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind! I have never really payed much attention to this, for me, perfect always was just, how to say, a question of grammar? Like it indicates an action, that started in the past and is still going on, or influences somehow the present. Glad you are here, scrutinizing our translation and explaining all these peculiarities! 😊👍

Perfect was (has been?) a matter of grammar not only for you, Jane. I suppose it's the common problem in this country. The so-called Moscow English?

Jane Leshдобавила комментарий 8 лет назад

Exactly, I would call it a Slavic English)) I am not from Moscow 😊

Tatiana Gerasimenkoдобавила комментарий 8 лет назад

Me too. But I heard the term long ago. It's the problem of textbooks in Russia if not the teaching as a whole, I think.

I'm glad this was helpful. It's important when studying the language, to get to the point where you can look beyond the grammar and start to read attitudes and emotions into what you see in writing and hear from people. For instance, hopefully now you realize there's a BIG emotive difference between "what did you do?" and "what have you done?"

Jane Leshдобавила комментарий 8 лет назад

Oh yeah, I actually always knew the difference between these particular phrases because they are even translated differently: "What did you do" - Что ты сделал? "What have you done" - Что ты наделал?

Jane Leshдобавила комментарий 8 лет назад

Just in other cases of perfect it never really occurred to me that it could imply frustration, disappointment etc.

Grammatically, your translations are correct. But emotively, they are used in two different situations. If somebody tells you they went on vacation, you can ask them What did you do? However, if you walk into a room, there's blood everywhere and your son is holding a knife, you ask What have you done?

Jane Leshдобавила комментарий 8 лет назад

Yes, sure, I understand this difference)))
