Контекст?

Rinuccia Rettдобавила комментарий 5 лет назад

International law after all is a system of manners written large

Russ Sдобавил комментарий 5 лет назад

Система общепринятых правил поведения (приличия)?

Tatiana Gerasimenkoдобавила комментарий 5 лет назад

Я вот металась между «правилами поведения» и «механизмами». Writ(ten) large - в широком смысле ¿

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

More weird English. I think we may need the whole paragraph to figure this one out.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoдобавила комментарий 5 лет назад

🙄 Екатерина, можете назвать источник, откуда Вы взяли своё предложение?

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

hahahahaha. I found a reference to that statement in a textbook, with a footnote that says: “as they say: discuss.” 😂 When a teacher doesn’t really understand something themself, they’ll tell the class to read it and “discuss” (talk among themselves to try to figure out what the hell it means))) https://books.google.com/books?id=74Zmct-7hGIC&pg=PA1&lpg=PA1&dq=%22+a+system+of+manners+written+large%22&source=bl&ots=h3vca-EyaN&sig=ACfU3U27v6DsayHObLf8zB_uQ-NOiaIMYA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiwzayY36LqAhXGKM0KHURFDR0Q6AEwA3oECAsQAQ#v=onepage&q=%22%20a%20system%20of%20manners%20written%20large%22&f=false

>>When a teacher doesn't really understand something themself, they'll tell the class to read it and "discuss"...
Именно! Классная тактика. Вот мы и есть «класс», который должен прочитать и обсудить, чтобы понять, что там к чему, чёрт возьми.

Vlad is a miracle worker! 😆

Vlad Maccoohinдобавил комментарий 5 лет назад

thanks, awaiting for your option :-)

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

I don’t have an “option” because it doesn’t make sense to me. Sometimes it’s better to add NOTHING than to guess at ANYTHING.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

By the way, I was in no way approving of your translation with my previous comment.

Vlad Maccoohinдобавил комментарий 5 лет назад

Well, if you have nothing to offer, it's up to you

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

I’ll offer you some advice. You’re new here. We’re not in the habit of adding guesses instead of translations. We prefer to discuss things in the comments until we understand fully and then add an accurate translation that people can actually learn from. In your case, you didn’t translation the entire text, so it’s not even complete. The most diplomatic way to do this is to suggest a translation in the comments and see what other users think before you force a guess down our throats.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

Sometimes users don’t provide enough context. Above, in the comments, Anna expanded on her original post and added “International law, after all, is a system of manners written large.” It would make more sense to edit her post and add a complete translation when we find one.

Rinuccia Rettдобавила комментарий 5 лет назад

But there's another way) can give the phrase. See what others think and form your own. And based on my knowledge of this field, knowing the theory, I will think what the author wanted to say more with this statement.

Rinuccia Rettдобавила комментарий 5 лет назад

Thank you for your reasoning and translation offers.

Rinuccia Rettдобавила комментарий 5 лет назад

The sentence really can be understood in different ways. But each translation can be explained in its own way.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

I’m sure he wanted to say something, the problem is that he left to much to interpretation. As a native, I have a hard time understand what he meant with “written large.” Written in capital letters? Written everywhere? I have no idea what this means and I’m a professional translator and linguist. This statement is so mysterious that one textbook has the footnote: “As they say: discuss,” because the interpretation is seemingly anyone’s guess.

Rinuccia Rettдобавила комментарий 5 лет назад

Thank you for your advice, too. I have been using the translator for a long time, but I only ask in single cases.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

>Each translation can be explained in its own way.
Yes, but would you trust guesses from non-native English speakers when an actual native (me and the person who wrote the footnote in the textbook) have trouble finding its meaning?

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

Ekaterina, the advice was for Vlad))) He’s new to the site, and judging from his English, he’s still learning, but that doesn’t stop him from posting guesses left and right))

Rinuccia Rettдобавила комментарий 5 лет назад

Well, the author probably meant "written large" as a vastness to the greatest extent. after all, international law regulates relations between subjects of international law, and the main subjects are States. And to please everyone, really rules of conduct (laws) must be written in a broad sense.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

Again, when we have to assume what the author “probably meant,” we’re venturing into conjecture. Everyone can interpret this in their own way because they have no choice, but I personally don’t get it and would never venture to translate something that didn’t make sense to me. I applaud Vlad for his imagination.

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

It would be different if he had written WRIT LARGE, which means “written prominently.” That would have made a lot more sense. Maybe that’s what he meant.

Vlad Maccoohinдобавил комментарий 5 лет назад

Uly, you are speaking to much like a lady, but no one needs that. Like elsewhere, an asker is entitled to choose every answer according context and I am not going to ask your permission whether I may answer or not.

And I have something more to say. Your Russian experience is poor enough because Russian is not Ukrainian, not even a bit. You have to listen to the native Russian speakers like me, for example, who is living in Russian environment all their life and who uses this one language (only) at home and workplace. Until you choose the true Russian way, everyone is entitled to laugh on you.

Vlad Maccoohin, Uly’s Russian is way better than your English, dude.

Apparently I’m “speaking to much like a lady” 😂

But thank you for the compliment 👍🏼

But I thought I was entitled to it!🤣

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

You and everyone in the Ukraine - for some reason he seems to think I’m Ukrainian.

Holy Molyдобавила комментарий 5 лет назад

I see we have another champion here. I'm wondering if it's the same one or not.

Holy Molyдобавила комментарий 5 лет назад

He probably thinks that you’ve been learning Russian from Ukrainians...

⁌ ULY ⁍добавил комментарий 5 лет назад

And he sounds like he’s been learning English from Borat)))
