Если честно, у меня тоже не придумывается. Why didn't you stay inside/ Why did you go outside? - самое реалистичное, что можно услышать в таком диалоге.

Uly, what’s the difference between to sit home and to sit AT home?

To me, only SIT AT HOME sounds correct, although I guess some people in some contexts could say SIT HOME DOING NOTHING, etc. colloquially.
