As early as the 1st Century BC, ancient Roman philosopher and poet, Lucretius, in his work "On the Nature of Things," described a "churn" of water on the surface of the ocean. Pliny also spoke of a series of freshwater springs off the coasts of Turkey, Syria and the southern coast of Spain (Gulf of Cadiz).
