I don't know an English equivalent, but in *modern* Russian "жид" is an extremely offensive synonym of "еврей"
Possibly (not sure) eврей/жид is about the same as black/nigger, not to mention even more politically correct 'afro-american'. It's much worse than, say, "paki" towards a Pakistani.
Only notorious anti-semites use it.

Good to know, but as I said in the comment it's the degree of "derogatory" that is very important here.
