“CARRY ON a conversation” doesn’t mean to simply разговаривать. It implies that you (1) know enough of a language; or (2) are interesting/savvy enough to keep up with the other people in the discussion and be able to contribute.
😉
Улий, изменил, теперь можно оставить?
It depends. To keep a conversation going means to be intelligent or fluent enough to keep it interesting. Is that what the Russian means, or does it just mean to converse/engage in conversation?
Hm, "поддержать беседу" is just to converse, I deem. But maybe sometimes it really means to be competent, fluent, considering your explanation,.so it also depends)
Then if that’s the case, it’s good.
CHIP IN A CONVERSATION? This just gets better and better.
chip in a conversation - to interrupt with comments. Если я правильно поняла - это вмешаться в разговор, прервать его со своими комментариями.
Zoya, I’m glad YOU understood it. I’ve never heard it in my entire life, and according to this ngram, it doesn’t even exist in any books:
“CHIP IN WITH comments” is correct, CHIP IN A CONVERSATION” is bullshit.
AND it doesn’t correctly translate your post
From what I understand, your post means to HAVE A CONVERSATION, right?
Isaiah, I know exactly what it means even without your example. What I’m saying is that (one) even if it was correct, it doesn’t translate your post; and (two) the phrase “to chip in a conversation” doesn’t exist
If you really want to help others, ask Valery to remove that ridiculous translation from your post. It has no place here.
Valery, please remove your wrong translation from my post. It's your mistake.
