Vladislav: You can't use NO SOONER with HAD BEEN because NO SOONER refers to a momentary action, whereas HAD BEEN refers to an extended action.

Sam had been painting less than ten minutes when Missis Rolston came to him
No sooner had Sam been drawing/painting for 10 minutes than Mrs. Rolston came/walked up to him
