Can someone tell me what a зал к гостям is?

«Зал» is a living room, “к гостям» is a move towards guests

It depends on the situation. Normally, "зал" is not a living room in a private house or in an appartment. Зал is a large room used to receive guests - like a dance hall in a palace, banquet room, any hall for public, etc. Sometimes, low-educated people, usually in villages, say "зала (feminine gender)" reffering to the living room. I only heard "зала" once or twice in my life.
