Судя по предыдущему вопросу о революции, "застать войну" значит оказаться живым во времени, когда идёт война.
Может быть, to find oneself in the time of the war, или (happen) to see/survive/experience the war. Фантазия, но может быть угадал...

Yes, got it. I meant if it's known what war it was: usually, when we say "война", "во время войны", we mean WWII. In this case, should I say THE war? Like in "Where was your father during the war?"
