In I Know why the caged bird sings, the identities of the characters are revealed mostly by dialogue, you can clearly distinguish many people based on their speech. This style was distinctive to Big Bailey, no other African Americans that were in the Arkansas region speak in such a sophisticated manner, none of them ever said "er" either.
