What I didn't quite understand was the past in the first sentence. I had an impression the speaker bought it/sewed it/had it sewn sometime before, wore it and now they're about to give it away to the listener. 🤔

I got the impression that they saw it in a store and were describing it to the listener for her to possibly go and buy it.

Aha! Then we can use both the past and the present for "it was..." in Russian. I think the present would even be better.
