In this case, it means to stop drinking coffee. We use GO OFF and GET OFF in terms of quitting an addiction.
идти за кофе 😂
#4 в моей ссылке говорит STOP LIKING. И добавляет, что это British English. 🙄
Идти за кофе!!! 😂😂
We also use it in American English, but when the context is an addiction of some kind, it means to wean yourself OFF it.
Leave the dictionaries to EB. Stick with me and I’ll teach you REAL English.
Ну конечно, Улий! Словари порой учат тому, что давно уже устарело.
За здравствует REAL ENGLISH с Uly Marrero! :)))
Dictionaries have their place, but they don’t teach you to think contextually. It takes no intellect to repeat what the dictionary says like a robot. If it were that easy, EB (EveryBody) would speak perfect English. The trick is broadening your mind enough to discern in what context something might be used in the real world and try to render that. You can tell right away the people on here who actually research translations, and those who just write what they see in the dictionary. You belong to the former, of course. Brava!
Спасибо, Улий! Намёк понят. :))) Будем стараться. Если что, у нас есть ты. :))
👍🏼 😉
Going back to the subject, отказаться от is what actially comes to your mind when you see that question.
For instance, the website I linked is the perfect example. This woman decided to go off coffee while she’s pregnant in order to not expose her child to the caffeine.
Uly, sorry for being pernicketty, but why do they then say "retch at the thought of it (coffee)"/wasn't able to stomach coffee"? They're all British. 🤔
Because if you make it clear that by GO OFF you mean LOSE YOUR TASTE FOR coffee, then it’s plausible. But at first sight, GO OFF coffee implies quitting it.
Вот и как! Спасибо🙏
