Думаю, можно )
Elena, this JUST means только что.
А если хотят сказать "просто"?
Then it would be something like "I just wanted to make sure." Remember that JUST in the sense that you intended means SIMPLY, and if you said "simply made sure myself" it makes little or no sense.
A: Are you sure you locked the door? B: Yep. Just made sure myself.
Об этом и шла речь))
Да, Михаил, когда ты видишь это слово рядом с глаголом в прошедшем времени, это почти всегда значит только что.
Спасибо за пояснения
не за что
Да, спасибо, Uly!
You're welcome, Elena. The exception is that with "psychological" verbs like WANTED, THOUGHT, HOPED, INTENDED... the meaning is usually prosto: I just wanted to make sure the door was locked, I just hoped things would have been different after the war, I just thought you cared more about your health, I just intended this to be a prank.
Intresting, we're not taught such nuances
That's what your uncle Uly's for :-)
That's right, you're a real find, Uly 👍
Thank you, sweetie
🙋
Uly, how about this sentence:
I'd also translate it with "просто"
That could be either one depending on the context, but it's probably просто.
You just have to imagine the situation that the sentence would most likely be used. In the original post, I imagine someone asking "are you sure such and such is done?" And the speaker saying "I just checked it myself"
However in this new sentence, I imagine them talking about somebody whose life was in a downward spiral and they decided to turn things around because they simply hit rock bottom.
I got it. I JUST WANTED to say that JUST can be translated as ПРОСТО even without "psychological verbs". Right?
Yes, absolutely, again, it all comes down to context.
So, only with the verb meaning the intention "just" means "просто", right?
Yes, see above)
It depends. For example, if you hear "I just wished for a new car" you can imagine somebody blowing out a birthday candle and making a wish. But if somebody is standing next to a grave and says "I just wished he could've met his grandchildren" then it means prosto.
ok, thanks
