Uly, let me disagree with you. In this case he was supposed to be brought in, and not that he was supposed to bring smth himself.
Oh, I was going by the fact that you wrote "brought IT"... I guess you meant IN.
I'll correct it. ))
What's your take?
Aleh La Why active voice when we talk about fire? There are no " them" in russian sentence.
не понимаю. а согласование времен?
To Anna You are right . I just gave my version and switched from Passive using "they".
@Anna: as in Russian, we often turn a passive sentence active with THEY (which doesn't refer to anyone specific in this usage). He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, that's why they killed him -or- that's why he got killed.
See, you explained it much better than I would if I tried.
Ok. I just wanted to stick to original sentence.
@Anna: your version is excellent. The only thing is that I would write CANNOT as one word, or better still - use CAN'T.
You can always stick to your original translation, as long as it is grammatically correct. The question is if it will sound natural. I've heard people say " you know you are right in the sense of grammar, but we don't say that way". So, it's up to you.
I didn't mean your exemple. It's in general.
@Aleh: I agree with you 100%! The majority of the mistakes that I see on this site I brought about by the notion that anything that appears in a textbook is correct. Unfortunately, that does not always, and in fact usually, doesn't correspond to actual usage.
In fact, I remember myself arguing with you, based on something that I learned from textbooks. )))
I've had that argument with everybody,
Aleh! Unfortunately, that doesn't make me very popular with a lot of the users. I'm the Natural English Police) 👮
