Uly, но что это по-русски значит"круто, как слово"? Neat же еще имеет значение"ясный,четкий"
NEAT basically means that everything is in order, for example a neat room, drawer, desk is one where everything is in its place. A NEAT person is one that doesn't throw things around, but keeps everything in order. A NEAT drink is, for example, whisky with nothing added (also called STRAIGHT); other than those meaning, neat means COOL or NIFTY. I've never heard it in the sense of "clear" or "exact." Without any context, the present post is something you might say about a word someone used or made up that sounded cool to you. There's no other meaning of NEAT that could possibly be applied to a word.
Ok, I found out where this is from - it's a song by Lenka that has the line: "I'm free as a bird, and neat as a word." This has absolutely no meaning to me, since I would never consider a word 'neat.' But there you are ;)
Uly, here is a meaning of the word "neat" as "clever and simple"
Yes, with "solution" it makes sense because it refers to a quick and dirty solution without a lot of complication. However, with "word" it just sounds funny.
Ok, thanks, Uly)
Elena, the use of NEAT with the meaning of "cool" is from the fifties and sixties, when young people and beatniks used it. Now it's being brought back into the lexicon by hipsters and I'm hearing it more and more. I noticed something interesting - adults are using it to refer to other people's children when they're interesting, smart and have nice personalities and you can actually sit down and have a normal conversation with them: "I met your son yesterday - neat kid!"
Thank you, Uly, it's interesting)
