When you specify that you did something for three years, you’re giving your timeline a beginning and an end. In linguistics, this is called an EVENT. When you look back on an event, you use the simple past - especially if you’re going to contrast it with not doing it anymore in the present. You used the past progressive, which we would only use if that activity was concurrent with another one AND you can’t use a delimiter like THREE YEARS with it.

Also, you didn’t use a comma before BUT, and you said STILL CAN instead of CAN STILL.
