Речь идет о том, что человек переходит из одного состояния в другое, не контролируя этот процесс. Он становится автоматическим. Это неправильное действие. И именно такой неконтролируемый неправильный переход автор называет skid.

Раз это НЕКОНТРОЛИРУЕМЫЙ переход из одного состояния в другое, то у меня это ассоциируется с заносом автомобиля на крутом повороте - тоже неконтролируемый процесс. Мы же говорим «человека занесло».
