Nota (en-ru)

Добрый день!

Вопрос, который меня давно волнует, но который как-то не доводилось задать...

Какой артикль (a or an) надо ставить перед сокращением, начинающимся с согласной, но произносимым по буквам, и первая буква начинается с гласной?

То есть: a SOP vs. an SOP (эс оу пи)?

Улий, нужно мнение эксперта 😶😁

"When an indefinite article is needed immediately before an abbreviation, the pronunciation of the abbreviation determines whether ‘a’ or ‘an’ should be used."

Я согласен, но, думаю, некоторые сокращения можно произносить по-разному - по буквам или слитно, как акроним.

Whether it’s pronounced as letters or as an acronym, the spoken form is always pronounced as if the abbreviation were one word in speech and the first sound in this “word” determines which article is used. For example, UFO starts with a vowel, but it’s pronounced [yuwefou] so it’s “a UFO”.

By the same token, SOP begins with a consonant, but is pronounced [esoupi] so it’s “an SOP”.

many thanks Uly!
would it also be written an SOP? not only pronounced?

You’re always welcome. Yes, the pronunciation dictates which article you use, not the spelling.
