+++Alex: только... I can't say THAT about everything, but this I know for sure.

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Uly, I think there's a bit different meaning in your snippet.
It means we may be not much of a something somewhere else, but when it comes to this we're experts...

Alexander Аkimovadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Elena’s snippets are perfect to explain the meaning, so it’s Uly’s turn to come up with his ‘absolutely native’ version.

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

So you’re saying you don’t use this in reference to a fact?

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

It's not about a single fact, but being an expert in some field when in other field a person may be ignorant

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Something like that: I may not be an expert in something else, but as for this particular rule, I knew it well.

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

It can be also said about a place. I can't say for other countries, but as for Russia, there are a lot of nice holiday spots.

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Aha! Thank you, now I know what it means!

Alexander Аkimovadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Not to a fact, but to knowledge, awareness, skills, just what Elena suggested in her snippets, like ‘I might be not so good at something else, but I DO know how to repair computers’.
I would say that all these «что-что», «в чем-чем», «как-никак» emphasize that speaker’s statement about their knowledge or skills is true even if they are not so good at something else.

Alexander Аkimovadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Just replicated Elena’s message - looks like we were typing simulteniously🤝

Alexander Аkimovadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

...and about a place, of course...

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Uly, I'd translate that as
But may be there isn't a closer equivalent to our Russian phrase.

Alexander Аkimovadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Tatiana’s comment was a response to my confession that I hardly could tell the difference between ‘first’ and ‘at first’, and her message was like ‘I may be unaware of other nuances of English, but that is quite clear to me’. And, perhaps, implicitly: ‘And you Alex still don’t know such a simple thing!’

Alexander Аkimovadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Elena, your 🤝 is shown normally on my iPad, just as mine. Perhaps your screen needs color adjustment...

Elena Bogomolovaadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Strange, all other icons are of similar colour, except for this one, but now I'll know!

Why not put back your like there after the correction😜?

Alex, I never took it away. It's still there ;)

(A) Can you fix this outlet?
(B) Don't worry - if there's one thing I know how to do - that's it.

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

(A) This is a hard physics problem. Can you solve it?
(B) If there's one thing I'm good at, it's physics.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Thank you, Tatiana! Actually, "that's it" is a continuation of the preceding phrase: if there's one thing I know how to do, that's it (это - оно (fix an outlet)).

⁌ ULY ⁍adicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

-or- If there's one thing I know about, it's fixing faucets.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

That's it!

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

«уж что-что, а чинить краны я умею»

Alexander Аkimovadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadicionou o comentário 7 anos atrás
