Tatiana: MASTERING refers to a specific point in the language learning process, when you've reached the point that you are perfectly conversant in that language. I think the Russian statement refers to generally having proficiency in a language, knowledge of a language. Also, the conditional seems out of place - there seems to be no such optionality in the original Russian.

Galia: We wouldn't say A freedom of choice, because it's uncountable (except in very limited contexts, for instance, when it's described: The citizens of the US enjoy a freedom of choice that is unknown in most countries.) Also, I think the word FEELING is pivotal and missing in your translation.

Emil: Conceptually I LOVE your translation - it's succinct and the vocabulary is good (especially the word SENSE). However, grammatically it needs some help: "Knowing a foreign language GIVES ONE a sense of free choice." Good work!

Although FREEDOM OF CHOICE is indeed a fixed term, I find it too political and/or religious for this statement. I think the translator would do well to make it more "universal" with creative wording such as "Knowing a foreign language opens up innumerable windows of choices" -or- "Having knowledge of a second language instils in one a sense of choice" (to use Emil's wonderful turn of phrase).
