My desire number one is to enter the university

Yefim Yasnogorskypublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Paddington Bearpublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Those who have doubts, please read this: https://www.ox.ac.uk/students/registration?wssl=1
"The registration process", paragraph number two in particular.
(When you login to Student Self Service you will need to check your personal, contact, academic and other information and confirm that you wish to be enrolled at the University of Oxford.)

Yefim Yasnogorskypublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Paddington Bearpublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Подать документы = to submit application / to apply.

Yefim Yasnogorskypublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Paddington Bearpublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Yefim Yasnogorskypublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Yefim Yasnogorskypublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Paddington Bearpublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Yefim Yasnogorskypublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Paddington Bearpublicó un comentario 8 years ago

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

It's nobody's wish to ENROLL in a university. Enrollment is just part of the process of registering and then attending. The goal is to eventually ATTEND a university. Saying that your number one wish is to enroll in a university is like saying that your lifelong dream is to book a flight to Paris. Booking the flight is just the beginning of the process, flying to Paris and being in Paris is the dream.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

Nastya, sorry, but MY GOAL/DREAM NUMBER ONE isn't idiomatic. We would say MY NUMBER ONE GOAL/DREAM, or more creatively and idiomatically "first on my wish list" or "number one on my bucket list"

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

My pleasure, Tatiana!

Paddington Bearpublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Sorry Uly, regarding enrolment, I shall stick to the British way of saying things. As I mentioned before, American version of English is quite different from British, but it does not mean that only one of them can be correct. Both versions have right to exist. .

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

Nastya, darling, i'm so tired of Russians justifying faulty English by trying to explain to me that it's British, as if I don't know the difference. I'll remind you that English the language the feeling the instinct - is an intrinsic part of my being as a native speaker. Just like I would never presume to tell a Russian, let alone TEACH a Russian, about the Russian language, nothing you can say will convince me that "enrolling in a University" is something that anyone could possibly wish for. However, if "being registered in a University" is something you would wish for, then I support you 100%. However, if you want to sound like a coherent, informed, English-speaking person, then I don't recommend it.

Paddington Bearpublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Uly, Sorry mate but you are talking a load of bollocks. North Americans are famous for sloppy English and justifiably so. If Russians pick fault you deserve it and it is not only Russians, it is pretty much the rest of the English speaking world. Americans invented Webster's dictionary to simplify the language when it did not need it.
In Moscow we have foreigners from all over and if I am not mistaken the most heated argument over English grammar was between a Texan and a Swiss. At the end of it the entire pub was clapping for the Swiss guy, English, Scots, Icelanders, Germans, Argentinians, because he succinctly elucidated on the poor Texan's pathetic grammar. It was not a Russian, a Swiss.

Holy Molypublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Anastasia, first of all you're being terribly offensive. It's unbelievable. Are you out of your mind? Second of all Uly Marrero has a DEGREE in English language and 35 years of experience as a professional translator. Who the hell are you to teach a professional the difference between AmE and BrE? Stop this crazy shit right there! And, finally, getting back to the topic, "to enrol" (by the way if you wish to "stick to the British way of saying things" you might also try to stick to the British way of WRITING those things) means TO REGISTER!
Here is just one example for you:
http://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/short-courses/student-info/how-to-enrol
You can find tons of examples yourself if just go google it. But I'm going to help you on this one and raise a topic on UsingEnglish forum. I'll share the link with you and everybody else here.

Added my own version just in case.

Tatiana Gerasimenkopublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Holy Molypublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Tatiana Gerasimenkopublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Tatiana Gerasimenkopublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Ignorantia non est argumentum.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

Tatiana and Olga, thank you both for your support and kind words. It's lamentable that there are people in the world who would judge an entire group based on the actions of a drunk, illiterate Texan... in a bar. A Ukrainian guy once corrected one of entries by telling me that the correct way to write DURING is втечении, and not в течение. If I was like Nastya, I could have opted for continuing to use втечении and justified it by saying: "Oh, don't you know? That's how they write it in the Ukraine. Sorry, but I think I'll stick to the Ukrainian version! :)" [and yes, I know that Ukrainian is a language in and of itself!] Fortunately, as with most bigots, their words don't diminish the validity of the group they condemn, they just make themselves look smaller and more idiotic. Nastya, my sweet, may all your dreams come true - especially the one of enrolling in a university. We should all have such lofty aspirations! I hear it can be a terribly tedious process :)

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

And if you want a British version, here's Oxford: https://www.ox.ac.uk/students/new/arrive?wssl=1 Especially in (3) where it reads: You need to register in order to attend your programme of study, release your loan from the UK Student Loans Company/sponsor/awarding body, use your University email account, obtain your University Card, print an enrolment certificate, be eligible to take examinations and access your results. Your status as a member of the University is not confirmed until your registration has been completed by your college (or department for non-matriculated courses), which usually takes place in Week 0 of term.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

In other words, again, ENROLLMENT is part of the process, ATTENDING is the ultimate goal :)

Holy Molypublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Uly, the funny thing is that some people really believe that all Americans have a massive lack of English grammar. How stupid is stat? Plus assuming that all Brits are perfectly grammatically educated is even more stupid. This only can say someone who has never lived in UK and never communicated to all kinds of people on a daily basis.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

In every country and every language, there's a faction that for whatever reason is not as eloquent or "grammatical" as another. I'm not a classist, so I won't call them a lower class simply a different one. The English language, as an ever-expanding, living, breathing corpus, is something that lives in our psyche and generally, on the broader spectrum, requires no classification for explanation to be understood by the native speaker. People like Nastya would probably turn their noses up at the language found in the works of Mark Twain, for example. However, that doesn't keep even the Brits from reading these books in school. If she opened her mind, our beloved Nastya would understand that even this English represents a historical and treasured glimpse into one phase of the evolution and globalization of our rich and varied language.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

Having said that, it takes an out and out moron to try to make a native speaker swallow something that is absolute bullshit, not to put too fine a point on it. She has a lot to learn. Now I know why her dream is to enroll in a university!

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

On another note, Olga, I commend you. There are so many others like Nastya on this site who come up with the most nonsensical gibberish and have the nerve to insist that it's correct. You never back down, and I love that. To me, that quality is what rounds off your mastery of the English, which is nothing short of spectacular. And all the more admirable is the fact that when you're in doubt, you're willing to ask, listen and learn. Brava!

Holy Molypublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Thank you, Uly, I always value your opinion *)

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

So in closing...

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

Sorry Nastya, regarding ATTENDING UNIVERSITY, I shall stick to the CORRECT way of saying things. As I've HOPEFULLY MADE YOU SEE, there's an American dialect and a British dialect, with their colloquial, grammatical and lexical differences, but they both agree that what is wrong is just wrong!

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

Also, kudos to Yefim for being the first one to point out this glaring error!

Paddington Bearpublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Sorry folks! My choice of words was not the best, and I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Mr. Marrero. Hope nobody died :)

Thanks! Really appreciate it . There is no such thing as bad publicity :)

Oleg Shevaldyshevpublicó un comentario 8 years ago

hi Folks,
good to see that the peace is back to Earth 😊
one point regarding the initial question. with the current education system in Russia, the requestor may be in that state of mind that the only thing she wants now and up to the end of summer is indeed to join (or get enrolled into) a university...
attending the university is too far in the future now...

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

Who knows. I'm so over this post.
