nota (ru-en)

I’m wondering if “the clock is ticking” is good enough for время идёт, in the sense of hurrying someone up. And I’m aware of other options the dictionaries have, including on here:)

По-моему, это основное значение, = time is running out, надо торопиться

⦿ THE CLOCK IS TICKING is used in general when you risk being late or not completing something in a timely manner. If you’re running late for a movie, your husband might say this to you while you dress to urge you to hurry up. ALSO, this phrase is very common when urging a woman to have children because if she waits too long, she’ll be too old. In this context, we also say YOUR BIOLOGICAL CLOCK is ticking.

⦿ TIME IS RUNNING OUT is only used when you’ve been allotted a certain amount of time in which to complete a certain task and that time is almost up like answering on a game show or when you only have a certain amount of time to take advantage of a promotion to buy something at a good price. But if you’re running late for a movie, your husband won’t say “Let’s go. Time is running out.”

⦿ CHOP CHOP! is commonly used to get people to start doing something or do it faster: [in an office] “Come on, people, chop chop! We have to finish this project by 5!”

⦿ WE/I DON’T HAVE ALL DAY!

⦿ GET THE LEAD OUT! meaning figuratively that someone has lead ([lɛːd] свинец) in their butt and it’s slowing them down.

⦿ GET A MOVE ON! meaning to move a little fast because we’re running out of time.

Шесть вариантов с подробным объяснением!🔥🙏
So if a schoolboy and I have one hour to do his homework (until four p.m.); it’s three o’clock now, so the countdown is on, can I use any of these?
The clock is ticking.
Chop Chop!

In that case, you can use all of them because you have a set amount of time and it’s running out.

⦿ LET’S PUT THE PEDAL TO THE METAL it’s almost four! This is in reference to pushing the accelerator pedal in your car all the way down to the metal floor.
