Sergey, we use THINGS to refer to a general situation or mood. For instance, after the father dies, the mother might say “Things have gotten really sad at our house. Nobody talks and you never hear laughter anymore.” -or- when a new manager starts at the office “Nick has really improved things at the office; everyone comes to work on time and enjoys their job.” You can also ask someone “How are things with you?” (= how is your life in general?)
