Terence answered to his neighbor, who told him to mind his own business: Homo sum: humani nihil a me alienum puto. - I am a man, nothing human is alien to me. Immigration is always a very curious issue to me. Especially in the Americas. As I write, I keep thinking that I´d simply not exist, as I know myself, had my ancestors been detained at customs. The version most people cite in the English-speaking world is with ALIEN. I’ve heard it all my life.
This preference for ALIEN was further reinforced by Walt Whitman’s famous use of it:
We must collect all possible versions and give people freedom to choose among.))
But as a native, I’m also in a position to give insights to those versions and help them choose the right one. Sometimes there are cultural and other factors at play that the reader may not know about, such as the Walt Whitman angle in this case.
Well, I believe you but still we have one thing to do — to make the above Jeffrey Berman (Univ of Massachusetts Press) and others follow the mainstream! ))
