Dana -publicó un comentario 7 years ago

Александр Ивановpublicó un comentario 7 years ago

May be the man is mentally ill or something.

CHECK also has the meaning of leaving something like a coat at the door when you enter a formal event. They give you a ticket, and, when the event is over, you present the ticket and get your coat back. We call that “checking your coat at the door.” Figuratively, will use the same expression when we refer to something that we prefer people not bring into a situation. For example, a person who counsels troubled young people might introduce himself to the group by saying something like “In my sessions, I welcome different viewpoints and opinions. Some of these may be very different from your own, so I ask that everyone check their prejudices at the door.“ That means... leave your prejudices at the door before you come in here. Another example, Missy has been moody and snippy with her family lately. One morning, she asked her mother if she can skip school and spend the day with her. Her mother says “That sounds like fun, but you’ll need to check your attitude at the door.”

And your example, the man is entering a situation or a place knowing that in order to go there, he’s going to have to give up his freedom and his intellect.
