+++Artem: that's the No. 1 answer. BUM has a negative connotation - a bum is considered crazy, lazy, drunk, etc. A decent person who lives on the streets is HOMELESS, and there's no offense in referring to one as homeless, but "bum" is quite offensive. I believe that бомж also carries this derogatory connotation, but I may be wrong.

"tramp" is what they used to call bums in the past, but now we use it more to refer to a woman who sleeps around.

⦿ ULYadded a comment 7 years ago

"drifter" is a person who moves around and doesn't settle down in one place, but unlike a bum, a drifter will work and take temporary residence in a town, and then move on after a little while.

"a homeless one" isn't idiomatic - we don't use this in any context.

Вопрос: в песне "The Lady is a Tramp" слово tramp не означает " проститутка", ведь она была написана достаточно давно, правда?

⦿ ULYadded a comment 7 years ago

I honestly don't know what they meant by tramp in that song. I think it meant something more like a drifter because the song describes someone who is quite unpredictable and moves around a lot

⦿ ULYadded a comment 7 years ago

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago
