Что-либо (жизнь, обстоятельства) никогда не будут прежними.

    Translator's comment

Перевести на русский "things" в данном контексте практически не возможно. Мы не говорим "вещи никогда не будут прежними", потому что мы не используем существительное "вещи" в том смысле, в котором в английском используется "things". Точнее используем, но в меньшей степени. Например "all these things make me sad" мы спокойно переведём как "все эти вещи меня огорчают" или "Why are you telling me all these awful things?" - "Зачем ты мне рассказываешь все эти ужасные вещи?". А вот в ситуации "things will never be the same" перевести "things" на русский не получится. Нужно искать замену, в зависимости от контекста, в котором употребляется фраза. Если речь идёт об отношениях в паре, то вместо "things" можно так и сказать "наши отношения никогда не будут прежними".

Elena and Aleh, I don't think you grasped the meaning of this expression. This is something that you say AFTER something happens, which you consider so fulminating that it has altered life, the world, your relationship, etc. forever.

Aleh Laadded a comment 8 years ago

I think we're good on this one. If things are not the same, they cannot be repeated. In my view, the translation is the expression of regrets about something that is gone. Maybe, our translations look at the situation from a slightly different angle. But they convey the general idea of this expression.

Aleh Laadded a comment 8 years ago

Actually, in my humble opinion, your version "всё изменилось навсегда" means exactly "Не повторяется такое никогда".

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8 years ago

I'm not questioning you, Aleh, because I know Russian is your native language and you know it instinctively. However, we usually say this when something bad happens and Не повторяется это никогда to me almost sounds like a lament that something won't happen again. One of the most common contexts for the English expression is when a woman discovers that her husband was unfaithful and says "I forgive you, but things between us will never be the same again." In other words, our relationship has changed forever. How can you adapt your variant to this comment? Я прощаю тебя, но не повторяется такое между нами никогда" оr прощаю тебя, но все между нами изменилось навсегда". ?

Aleh Laadded a comment 8 years ago

In your example, when the wife was finally fed up and left her husband, he suddenly realized, that "things will never be the same", or "things (like the relationship that he was in) can never be repeated again". So, we're just being a bit more dramatic. And, BTW, my translation is a line from the lyrics of one the older Russian songs.

The thing is that she doesn't leave him. She decides to forgive and stay with him with the understanding that their relationship will never again be as it was before she found out about his infidelity. Actually "will never be the same" can be said of any situation which changes things forever - even about oneself: "Last year my brother convinced me to watch a video of a man being beheaded and I haven't been the same since." = it changed me forever.

Holy Molyadded a comment 8 years ago

Aleh, you got this one wrong. "Things will never be the same (again)" means that things (circumstances) has changed and they are not going to be the way they were before. "Не повторяется такое никогда" has a totally different meaning.

What about " Что ушло, не воротишь"?

Holy Molyadded a comment 8 years ago

No, Tatiana, this one also won't work. "(something/someone) will never be the same (again)" means that some circumstances or a person has changed after something (usually bad or unpleasant) happened. One can say "my life will never be the same again after my Gran died" or "things will never be the same after he broke up with me" or "after I saw that horrible accident I will never be the same again".

Anytime, Tatiana :)

If I were in that woman's shoe, I would probably say:"Я прощаю тебя, но ничто между нами уже не будет таким, как прежде". In my opinion, Ekaterina's version is that wrong. Except of "вещи", of course.

Holy Molyadded a comment 8 years ago

That's it, Tatiana! "Ничто уже не будет прежним"! That's perfect! Thank you! 👍

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8 years ago

That's the meaning, Tatiana, and it can be paraphrased in English as "Everything has changed." The woman could effectively say "I forgive you, but everything has changed between us."

Olga, thank you for the wonderful clarification.
