why is an unknown number so scary?
what if it is a recruiter wanting to propose your dream job?

I also don't get it. Maybe it's a hipster thing? He definitely looks hipster to me. On the other hand we're really unused to receiving calls from unknown people in our day to day life. I mean 10-15 years ago each time a phone rang it was a complete surprise: who might be on the other end? But now most of the time you know who's calling before you hear their voice. And if you use different ringtones for different people you may know who's calling even without looking =)
Oleg and Igor,
Don't you have telemarketing?
At least here, unknown numbers and private numbers are mostly people from telephone companies, bank companies (this mostly in a fixed phone) and also there are also these phone calls from Juanito, the cousin I have in the States who is calling to tell you he is coming and needs money and you need to send the money ASAP. A lot of extorsion through the phone. :-( Also, a few people in the States have told me they do not pick their house's phones anymore, which for me is non-sense, just to reach the person through their cellphones
Out of 5, 4 are from my telephone company offering me something. I always answered and if I missed the call. I called back, send the text or if I am not in the mood, I said to myself : He/she -when needed- will call again. ;-)
It is true at least in Mexico, unknown numbers are sometimes called extortion, hence fear.
we also have it, but it's not that huge here. though recently they've created some kind of car insurance database, so when your insurance is about to expire you get a lot of calls, offering new insurances.
true!
