Drink To Me! - старинная английская застольная песня. Еще Ритчи Блэкмор говорил, что пел её в школе...
If you say DRINK TO ME, that means that you want someone to propose a toast in your honor; if you say HAVE A DRINK ON ME it means that you’re paying for the drink.
many thanks Uly!
that's what I thought 👍
You were 100% right!
So this really means “drink to me”?
correct
+++Oleg!
and why have I asked this question?
because there is a song by AC/DC "Have a drink on me!", and I was struggling to find a proper translation...
Mike Ufa, please remove your translation.
Yep. We also say HAVE A DRINK FOR ME if your friends are at a bar, for example, and you can’t join them because you have another commitment.
тогда это будет "выпей за меня" в значении "вместо меня"
Aha, so both translations are possible! I’ll add it))

hi Uly,
yes, we seem to have two different prepositions in English (to me - praising me, and for me - instead of me), with only one in Russian (за меня; вместо меня still can be used in the second case, but it won't be the preferred option)
thanks for picking this up!
Anytime, Oleg))
