Future Perfect

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 3 years ago

They can’t buy a new car until they save up enough money.🧐

They'll have bought a new car by the end of the year. They are going to buy a new car by the end of the year.

They’re NOT GOING TO BUY… this is a plan, strategy

Pink Peonyadded a comment 3 years ago

Past/Future Perfect Continuous?...

Pink, this is why context is so important. Here’s a context where you CAN use the future perfect:

[Business Owner]: This couple that works for me is stealing money from my business every day, but the police won’t let me do anything until they’ve finished their investigation. By the time they finish, these people will have bought themselves a new car with my money!!

[Detective]: They won’t have bought a new car until they’ve saved up enough money for it there’s still time.
__________
In this context, the detective is echoing what the business owner said before, using the same tense as a prediction/correction of what was stated.

But having said that, Raphael’s comments are very valid - it sounds very unnatural as a stand-alone sentence with no context.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 3 years ago

The future perfect only sounds natural if you state BY WHEN and take the attitude of making a prediction:
(1) By this time next year, I’ll have been in Moscow three years.
(2) By the time you get out of the army, she’ll have met twenty men and long forgotten you.
(3) By the time you save up enough money to buy that car, a better, more expensive model will have come out and you’ll want THAT one.

Future Simple?...
They won’t have bought a new car until they’ve saved up enough money for it there’s still time.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 3 years ago

Можно и present perfect и present simple: until they’ve saved -или- until they save

в данном случае мы имеем дело с Time Clauses, то есть после when/before/after/as soon as...
мы не можем употребить будущее время, потому используем pres.simple/pres.continuous/pres.perfect.
1 - They won’t have bought a new car UNTIL
they save up enough money for it - pres.simple
2 - They won’t have bought a new car UNTIL
they’ve saved up enough money for it pres.perfect

Future Perfect + Time clause (until) + Present Continuous?
