How to translate? (ru-en)

Я один раз была свидетельницей жаркого объяснения, что такое баклажан между двумя носителями, пока через 10 минут не выдержала и не перевела, что имеется в виду.

User translations (1)

  1. 1.

I once overheard two native (English) speakers in a heated discussion over the meaning of the Russian word баклажан until ten minutes in, I couldn’t stand it anymore and just told them what it meant.

жаркого объяснения - неудачное выражение
жаркий спор, жаркая дискуссия

Once I witnessed a hot discussion between two native speakers trying to explain what 'баклажан' is until, in 10 minutes, I lost my temper and translated it myself

Well not exactly it went that way. A Canadian, an English and me were speaking about our favourite food. The Canadian said “I really really like eggplants, especially the way my mom cooks them. Oh god they are so delicious!” “What’s the eggplant?”, asked the English, “we don’t have eggplants here in the UK”. “Yes you do, I saw them in Tesco”. Thus the game started. We didn’t have smartphones back in those days, so the gestures depicting what the eggplant should look like followed, then came detailed explanations how they grow and what their colour is. “No, I’ve never seen them in my life”, the English said at last. “Yes, you have”, the answer was, “they are sold nearly at every grossers”. “Gosh no!” and so on. “It’s an aubergine, Lisa”, I said at last 🤓. “An aubergine? You call the aubergine an eggplant? Oh god” 😂

I wouldn’t call it “a hot discussion”, it was rather an intellectual intercourse 😉

I once overhead two natives discussing heatedly what the (Russian) word "baklazhan" is/was. After ten minutes of the argument, I lost it and just translated it for them.

Перевела, не глядя на объяснение Анны. Мне показалось, это о переводе на русский))

A vivid discussion of what an eggplant is in context of it being an aubergine

grumbleradded a comment 4 years ago

Русский текст Ули о "баклажане" имеет очень отдаленное сходство с реальной историей.

Кстати, название eggplant очень распространено в Англии наряду с aubergine. Т.ч. не понимаю, из-за чего весь сыр-бор.

Anna Annaadded a comment 4 years ago

Неа не распространено) именно aubergine там

Anna Annaadded a comment 4 years ago

Так же как shuttle или coach - это bus

grumbleradded a comment 4 years ago

используется, особенно на рынке, где они любят более простые названия.

И shuttle, и coach тоже оба используются, но смысл разный.

shuttle - простой маршрут, часто до аэропорта/вокзала и обратно, но не только.
"... we provide our students with a free shuttle bus service on campus which means you can travel from one end of the campus to the other ..."

coach - длинные междугородные маршруты

Ни разу не слышала eggplant ни от одного англичанина, но да, вероятно, где-то используется. Просто не встречала

grumbleradded a comment 4 years ago

eggplant встречается, конечно, реже, но не думаю, что надо кому-то объяснять, что это такое. Например,

Thank YOU) Ули, как сказать стала свидетелем разговора?
Unexpectedely I took part in a conversation. Is it good to say?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 4 years ago

That doesn’t sound quite right. I would say “I was unexpectedly drawn into a conversation”
