How to translate? (en-ru)

when she was angry she could get right up on her high horse and come it over me with the best of them

User translations (2)

  1. 1.

Стоило ей рассердиться, она вдруг становилась надменной и начинала распекать меня в хвост и в гриву.

Перевод: Ирина Михайловна Бессмертная. IMHO, не очень близкий к тексту.

А где написано, что официальный?

grumbleradded a comment 5 years ago

Да, перевод ужасный.

grumbleradded a comment 5 years ago

Правильнее сказать, СЛИШКОМ близкий к тексту.

grumbleradded a comment 5 years ago

Ну да, буквальный. Я отталкивался от моего первоначального "не очень близкий к тексту"

What does COME IT OVER mean?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

I’ve seen some of the strangest English on here lately.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

IT doesn’t refer to the horse - it doesn’t really refer to anything. We have an expression, to LORD IT OVER someone which means to act like you’re better than them or wave an accomplishment in someone’s face to make them feel useless. This is apparently the same concept, but with COME.

Let me say that from what I’ve seen of John Fowles, I officially can’t stand his writing!

Here COME IT OVER ME means to BERATE ME

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

Now what does THAT mean??

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

But what does “run it over me” mean?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

I don’t understand anything anymore :(

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

This means: “(She was generally nice to me(?)), but when she got angry, she had no problem becoming sanctimonious and treating me very arrogantly.” (WITH THE BEST OF THEM means easily, with no hesitation or difficulty)

“Alan has only been studying Russian for a year, and his Russian is far from perfect, but when he’s drinking, he can hold his own in a conversation with the best of them.” (=he keeps talking with no shame or hesitation)

Ну вот, в приложении уже не открывается....
Може быть поудаляем все комментарии насчет "проехался"?

“Zoya doesn’t often post things on here, but when she knows she’s right, she can stand by her translations with the best of them.”

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

I don’t know how to say this in Russian :( I just wanted to explain what it means.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 5 years ago

WITH THE BEST OF THEM and LIKE NOBODY’S BUSINESS both mean the same thing.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 5 years ago

Алан всего лишь год изучает русский, и ему далеко до совершенства, но когда выпьет, стоит на своём только так/только в путь.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 5 years ago

Зоя нечасто публикует переводы, но если уж она это сделала, значит, она в них уверена и будет стоять за них горой.

Андриолли 1added a comment 5 years ago

Улий, рассмешил про переводы))
