Grumbler, а почему among?
Не знаю - это я из головы взял. Думаю, among тоже встречается.

Grumbler, that sentence is really unnatural. First of all, AMONG is only used in this context in certain conditions and this sentence is too general. Secondly, FEW means мало, A FEW means несколькие.
AMONG is used with a class or community that you are new to. And since AMONG relates to a group of people as a whole, A FEW would sound strange (the listener would be left thinking “does he mean among a group, or was it just a few people?”)
“When we first settled in the Amazon, we tried to make friends among the natives from the surrounding villages, but were ignored by them at every attempt.”
OK, delted
So, what's wrong with
“When we first settled in the Amazon, we made a few friends among the natives"
?
Actually, nothing in that context because I established that we were new there and we’re talking about the natives as a community.
To me the original sentence sounds like some newcomers/tourists made a few friends with local French people ('natives').
I don’t know, it just sounds contrived. If they were in France, it would go without saying that they would be making friends with French people. AMONG almost makes them sound like a hostile group that was hard to befriend (which is true to some extent 😂)
