Grumbler: Customers NO longer have to...

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 years ago

Elena: shopping around IN different stores. But "for very long" is misused in this context. We use it for predictions: "The principal of the school was found to be sending intimate photos to one of his female students. He won't be principal for very long." Also, your "any more" should be one word in this usage "anymore," but it sounds horrible after "for very long" (which we've already established is out of place here.) So sorry, but this isn't your best work, hon. Grumbler's (almost) "Customers NO longer have to..." is the perfect way to express this.

Valery, your translation is grammatically correct, and may even make sense if the context is known, but it's highly unidiomatic.

Corrected - I had a feeling that something was wrong. Thank you

Grumbler, aside from that it a great translation.

Better than mine... which is pretty fucking good 😉

😇😇 How about ”wasting time" instead of "spending time"?

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago

Actually, the sentence itself reads not very good to me. If I got the meaning right, there should be исчезает необходимость длительных походов по магазинам. Теряется смысл has negative connotation, it's definitely off in an ad like that.

grumbleradded a comment 7 years ago

пропадает/исчезает смысл - практически то же самое, и я не чувствую "negative connotation"
Однако, я переделал предложение, а не перевел его - именно потому что мне оно не нравилось.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago

I meant that теряется смысл isn't a good choice in this context. Исчезает/пропадает необходимость would be much better.

and that’s what “a thing of the past” conveys.

Oh, you just made me think of another good translation

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago

Great expression! It's close to the Russian пережиток прошлого or пройденный этап.

I knew you’d like it

But “running from pillar to post” is also a great expression.

Хотела бы я посмотреть на того, кто попробует поспорить! 😁😁

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 years ago

Russian uses a similar tool in expressions like из огня да в полымя, хрен редьки не слаще, что в лоб что по лбу.
