"made the legs off the scene" is nonsensical

Alex: escape FROM is used for enclosures such as the zoo or a jail. If anything, it would be ESCAPED THE CRIME SCENE. However, in any case, there has to be captivity for someone to escape at all, so fleeing a crime scene doesn't warrant this verb since the criminals are not being held.

'escape' is not the best option here, I consent, and it's better without 'from'. How about 'escape from reality'? There's no captivity in this phrase. 'To flee' is not perfect fit either. If I were to translate 'fled the scene' into Russian, it would be 'покинули место'. 'Скрылись' has some secrecy to it.

I disagree, Alex. Anyone who feels the need to escape from reality, feels that they are being held back or held captive by their reality. As for fleeing the scene, I don’t care how they say it in Russian, in English it involves a very simple concept: you committed a crime and then you took off. Very simple.

Alex Hrypunadded a comment 7 years ago

That is exactly what 'покинуть место преступления' means.

Well that’s fleeing the scene of the crime.

We have an expression in Russian "сделать ноги (откуда-либо)", it was adopted from criminal slang. Means to leave the place fast, to flee. Anastasia translated it word to word 😂

Bless her heart ❤️

Well we don’t “make legs” in English, but we do “haul ass” and it’s quite popular in this context.

Haha I've never heard this one! Thank you, Uly 😘
