I`m awfully sorry for this weird question`s format. I`ve been trying to re-post this note three times but nothing seems to be actually working. Perhaps there`s something going on with the website itself.
Sergey, this article is called: "Politics and the English Language".
In the article he writes that the English language is very useful for liars and politicians (which is essentially the same things). This language is very easy to conceal true feelings and intentions.
Orwell offers 6 (not 11!) ways to deal with this phenomenon:
1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.
3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
4. Never use the passive where you can use the active.
5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
6. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.
Well, I'm not sure, but Sir Henry's answer doesn't quite seem to fit the question. So, I'll venture my own version:
Was it, by any chance, tea?
or pudding, if it's not tea, it should be pudding =)
Sir Henry, thanks for the interesting fact, I have never heard about it! I should probably read upon it. Sadly though it`s not the correct answer.
