NOTE: you can omit the THE for the same meaning. Also interesting is the expression NONE THE WISER which is used when something happens and nobody even notices it: My father grounded me for getting a bad grade. But my classmate, Dmitry, was having the party to end all parties and I just HAD to go. So when my parents were asleep, I took my dad's car keys, rolled the car down the street in neutral, started it, went to the party and came home at 5am - just before he got up. He found the car in its place, the keys on the hook, me in bed and was none the wiser.
