КТО-ТО is used for someone specific whose name you’re not using; КТО-НИБУДЬ means anybody at all, with no reference to anyone in specific. There’s your Russian lesson for today))

1. I see two different versions and both can be posted as translations.
2. Автостопщик is more succinct than человек, путешествующий... , hence it's more convenient for everyday use. I for one would prefer автостопер.
3. The кто-то vs кто-нибудь issue was at least once brought up on here. My point of view was (and still is) кто-то can well replace кто-нибудь in everyday speech in scenarios like the one in question.

«Кто-то» действительно означает «неизвестно кто», но в значении «кто-то неизвестный». Мне кто-то звонил, но я не успел поднять трубку. Я знаю, что КТО-ТО звонил, я только не знаю, кто это был. Поэтому с точки зрения стилистики невозможно ждать, пока «кто-то» тебе предложит тебя подвезти. А вот «кто-нибудь» это вообще неопределенный человек из массы неопределенных людей, любой человек, всё равно кто. Поэтому ждать можно кого-нибудь, кто подвезёт.

Всё это есть в учебниках и словарях, посмотрите.

Also, reading everyone's comments (instead of working coz it's noon here) I was surprised why no one suggested / mentioned "Голосовать, голосующий". that is exactly what we call it in Russian, aren't we. I personally Голосовал many time on the roads when was young. And I personally have picked голосующих a few times. I'm sure Uly would love to learn that it's common to use "Голосовать, голосующий" when we talk about hitch-hiking.

But the original says nothing about him actually hitching a lift. It says he was waiting.

Голосовать is a great verb, especially for hitchhiking, but it's a little bit "proactive" for the sentence under question. "Waiting for someone offering a ride and поднятием руки просить водителя машины остановиться aren't the same, are they?

Tatiana, I'm not sure what you mean by "Waiting for someone offering a ride" No one just stands by the road and waiting. People face the traffic and lift there hand, often with thumb up. That is called "Голосовать".
Since the original says "the hitchhiker stood on the side of the road" that implied the one had one's thumb up. I've not seen hitchhiker JUST standing by the road. They would always show a sign that they need a ride. So did I when hitchhiked.

Russ, while I'd technically agree with you - he might raise his hand for the motorist to understand his intention, but there's nothing about голосование in the original sentence. It implies he was hoping for someone to give him a ride.

No one is just hoping while hitchhiking. Everyone will show a sign indicating they need a ride. And that called "Голосовать". And of course, they will be HOPING for someone to give them a ride.

I have to agree, what differentiates a person standing by the road from a hitchhiker is the fact that they are hitching with their thumb up.

hitch-hiker IS голосующий на дороге, другими словами - тот, кто голосует на дороге. Все автостопщики - голосуют.
И если вы вчера видели автостопщика, который просто стоял около дороги, это не значит, Голосовать не может применятся в поездак автостопом.

Russ, I overlooked your голосующий - sorry for that. I don't agree that it's a good option for "hitchhiker" because голосующий means any person who needs to be given a ride for various reasons, including an accident.

And "hitchhiker" is a person who needs to be given (or asks for) a ride for various reasons. That is why can be called "голосующий". All hitchhikers голосуют на дорогах. Yet, Tatiana continues to insist that the word "Голосовать" does not fit here... Ridiculous.

Hitchhiking is when you stand on the side of the road and stick your thumb up to signal to passersby that you would like to be picked up and driven somewhere.

And in Russian it means Голосовать на дороге. (no matter for what purpose)

Or there is another term: "Ехать автостопом", но все кто едут автостопом голосуют на дороге чтоб поймать машину.
