Can’t figure a proper idiom, but the meaning is ‘This was expected for a long time, but it’s been done at last’
A: Ты понимаешь, я всё думал, думал, что надо бы купить новую машину для наших путешествий и вот, купил-таки L-200.
В: Давно бы так. А то, я уже стала думать, что ты так никогда и не решишься.

Basically it means "it's about time!".
Exactly!
But... It’s about time TO DO something while Наконец-то is said about something ALREADY DONE
Thank you both!
Olga you should add your translation
How about "none too soon"?
That means something like как раз вовремя
I think it fits then
I’m not too sure, but it sounds to me like there’s a difference like between наконец-то and как раз вовремя.
Maybe if you write a snippet to show how you would use it…
Uly, «наконец-то» я написал по ошибке. Должно быть «давно бы так», хотя разницы нет. А что касается примера, он в самом верхнем комментарии про покупку машины L-200
A: You understand, the more I thought about it, The more I realized that I needed to buy a new car for our trips, and so I did – an L-200.
В: It’s about time. I was beginning to think you would never make up your mind.
Uly, I think there's a good snippet in The Freedictionary and looks like it means давно бы так:
“none too soon” would not work here unless you desperately needed a car for a trip and it came five minutes before you were due to leave.
ок!
Elena, in your example from the FD none too soon means that if something didn’t happen, something else, unpleasant or tragical would happen then.
Olga’s ‘it’s about time’ is closer to the original meaning of «давно бы так»: They finally paid me my money. It’s about time’
Alexander, I mean the 2nd snippet:
‘I’ve mended the lamp in the children’s room.’ ‘None too soon. It’s been broken for weeks.
When I wrote «давно бы так» after Uly gave his translation “If we go to the Grocery shop first”, I meant that it was about time for someone to cut in and complete the discussion with a perfect version and that was Uly to do it (I removed that comment since it was in error - дано instead of давно).
Ok, anyway, since Uly’s translation of the L-200 snippet turned out perfect, I am sure that Olga MUST add her translation and that will be a happy end of our discussion🤓
I agree !
Okay then 😁
👍
Thank you, Olga! 😁
