How to translate? (en-ru)

What is?

Author’s comment

“This is absolutely incredible!” Brisk Run's voice practically squeaked. “You mean you've actually been to the realm of the Cosmic Goddesses?”

Rainbow Dash fidgeted. “Mmmmm... Yeah. But believe me, it's not exactly the most exciting place in the world.”

“Oh yeah? What is?”

Rainbow Dash merely smiled back. “I haven't discovered it yet.”

Everypony chuckled heartily.

“What IS!” This is a response to “it’s not exactly the most exciting place in the world“ It’s the short form of the rhetorical response “oh well, (tell me) what IS the most exciting place in the world.“

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

To give you a better example, if somebody criticizes you you can say “I’m sorry I screwed this up I’m not perfect.“ And the listener can respond “Who IS?“ Meaning that they agree that nobody is perfect. The stress is important here.

grumbleradded a comment 7 anos atrás

Judging by the reply, the stress seems to be "WHAT is" = "What place is the most exciting one (then)"
If so, the translation какое тогда самое?" was correct.
I'd say "А/и какое же тогда самое?"

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Actually, stressed WHAT would correspond to “place”, and stressed IS would correspond to “exciting”

grumbleradded a comment 7 anos atrás

Yes, I don't see any contradiction.

"What place is the most exciting one (then)?" ~ Name the place that is most exciting.

I’m not perfect. - Who IS? = Nobody is perfect.
It makes no sense to ask seriously to name a person that is perfect.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Correct, it all boils down to NOTHING, NOBODY.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

grumbleradded a comment 7 anos atrás

Why all?
If someone says "What IS?"= There is no place that is the most exciting one", this is rather a statement than a question. If so, there is no point in replying “I haven't discovered it yet.”

IMO, this reply implies that the question was serious, not rhetoric ~ "What place do you find the most exciting one?"

Do I misunderstand anything?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

This is a rhetorical question that corresponds/is an alternative for NOBODY/NONE/NOWHERE, etc... A: After three years in the US, you’d think Andrey would work on his English. I still can’t make out a thing he says on the phone. B: Who CAN? (= nobody can) Here, stressing the verb is imperative to the meaning because it corresponds to UNDERSTAND)

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

A: I hope you like my lasagna - this is only my second time making it, so it’s not exactly the best. B: What IS? (= there’s no such thing as the perfect lasagna = NOTHING is perfect)

grumbleradded a comment 7 anos atrás

I give up...

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Don’t give up. Try to translate this... A: Я сдаюсь!

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

«Да? Можно подумать, оно существует!»

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

These forms are short for “What place IS exciting?” “Name one place that IS exciting!”

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

You'd think there is/are... As if there were..

grumbleradded a comment 7 anos atrás

"Нет, говорящий утверждает, что ... НЕ существует. "

В ответ на такое утверждение я не стал бы отвечать такое место еще не встретил".
Или ответил бы, соглашаясь, "ДА, я такое место еще не встретил"

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Ok, look at the snippet I wrote in Russian. If you translate it into English, it means: A: I give up! English is not at all easy! B: What language IS? (=NO language is!)

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Grumbler, in short, the question IS the answer, if that makes any sense.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Saying What language IS? Is the same as saying NO language is, just rhetorically.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

Grumbler meant to say that the proceeding "I haven't decided it yet" contradicts your version of a rhetorical question, if I got that right.

grumbleradded a comment 7 anos atrás

"in short, the question IS the answer, if that makes any sense. "
Not here where one person asks and another answers.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

He asked and then elaborated on his own question: “Oh yeah? WhatIS?... (because) I haven’t discovered it yet.” ...everybody laughed.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

In other words: NONE is (exciting)...(and if there IS one), I haven’t discovered it yet!

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

It’s the same person speaking.

grumbleradded a comment 7 anos atrás

My understanding is that it's a dialogue, not a monologue

grumbleradded a comment 7 anos atrás

Brisk Run: “You mean you've actually been to the realm of the Cosmic Goddesses?”
Rainbow Dash: “Mmmmm... Yeah. But believe me, it's not exactly the most exciting place in the world.”
Brisk Run: “Oh yeah? What is?”
Rainbow Dash: “I haven't discovered it yet.”

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Ok, then he’s just agreeing with the fact that there is NO exciting place.

grumbleradded a comment 7 anos atrás

Rainbow Dash:

grumbleradded a comment 7 anos atrás

"Еще не нашла" не обязательно означает, что такое место не существует.
Хотя, когда говорят о чем-то "самом", можно и поспорить, но это уже гораздо глубже, чем предмет нашей дискуссии.

Можно спорить, что *на данный момент* всегда должно быть что-то "самое".

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

Oleg Shevaldyshevadded a comment 7 anos atrás

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

“(If there is one) I haven’t discovered it yet” is a funny way of agreeing with the previous comment that NO place there is exciting. That’s why everyone chuckled.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Some things just can’t be explained. If this app had voice recording everything would be much clearer because intonation is everything in this context. Otherwise the sarcasm and humor are lost.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

You could make a voice recording on another app and send a link on here. 🤨

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Here’s an exchange I heard on a show the other night that might explain things
better. Three douchebags at a party full of girls. A: I was just talking to two chicks at the bar. Neither one of them is DTF. B: Which one IS? (NONE of these girls are DTF!) C: “I” haven’t talked to them yet (=they can’t resist ME 😉). (Everybody laughs). If you can understand the humor in this exchange, then you can understand this post.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

DTF = down (готова) to f***

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

That’s what I’m trying to explain the rhetorical question assumes the negative
answer. What IS? = NOTHING is.

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás

Elena Bogomolovaadded a comment 7 anos atrás

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Elena, the problem is that I don’t know how to say this Russian, so I didn’t know if his translation was correct. Plus I wanted to make sure that he knew that in order for this to work, you have to stress the word IS.

Elena Bogomolovaadded a comment 7 anos atrás

Uly, he got everything, he wasn't just sure)

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 7 anos atrás

Well that was a hell of an interesting discussion either way!

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 7 anos atrás
