to Elena: "I'll not .." is not correct

Aleh Lapublicó un comentario 8 years ago

It sounds wierd, anyway. I've never heard anybody say that.

Aleh Lapublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Вообще-то в русском варианте нет слова "никогда".

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

NEVER не значит буквально НИКОГДА в этом случае.

Aleh Lapublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Not really. By adding "never" you make it sound more dramatic then the original version. Put back your English version and let see how it will be translated. Your fans don't count.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

It's not at all dramatic. It's an alternative to NOT that we use when something expected didn't or won't happen. In the past you can say He said he'd come to the party, but he never showed up. Not dramatic. In the future you can say I'm trying to get to the airport before he lands, but with this traffic I'll never make it. Not dramatic.

Aleh Lapublicó un comentario 8 years ago

It is dramatic when you translate it into Russian. Я не буду есть этот суп и Я никогда не буду есть этот суп are quite different in meaning.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

Because you're using NEVER with its meaning of AT NO TIME. It has another meaning which is simply NOT AT ALL, and is only used for future and past contexts.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

If somebody gave you a huge bowl of soup, you could say I could never eat that much soup. That doesn't mean AT NO TIME, it means THERE'S NO WAY, it's IMPOSSIBLE.

COLLECT MONEY doesn't mean собирать деньги in the sense of putting together or coming up a certain amount of money. It means to go around and get money that is due to you from people, so it doesn't work in this context. You could use "get/put THE money together, or "raise" or "come up" with THE money.

I see. I thought it would do but it didn't :(. Thank you, Uly!

Anytime, Elena.

Mariia M.publicó un comentario 8 years ago

@Uly: I meant precisely "collecting money" because when I hear such a sentence in Russian, I interprete it, first of all, like that: A person lacks their own money for sth and has to borrow some from their relatives or friends, or whatever.
In this case, would you still suggest another verb?

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

Yes, Maria, I would suggest RAISE or COME UP WITH. The thing is that you COLLECT money that's owed to you, not that you want to borrow.

Mariia M.publicó un comentario 8 years ago

@Uly: Ok, thank you. It seems I might want to research into the matter more deeply. I've always thought that "to raise money" is sth you do mostly for charity (by means of selling cakes, holding auctions or sth), wheras "to collect" and "to gather money" is more neutral in terms of how you do it.
But I do like the "come up with" suggestion :)

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

COME UP WITH means to find money by any means necessary, and RAISE means to use fundraising efforts like for charity.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 8 years ago

Aleh, did you have any other questions? Can I help you further understand the nuances of the word NEVER in English?

Анастасия Кудринаpublicó un comentario 8 years ago

Uly,я поняла ,почему ты не перевёл ТО предложение.
Это могло значить только ОДНО,что я правильно догадалась о смысле!!!
