Alex, was that written by native English speakers?

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

I understand, but written by Russians or native English speakers?

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

I figured as much. It’s not natural. It reads like Russian directly translated into English.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

I’m sure she does, but the quality of the English isn’t native. We don’t use IT’S in that context because the word IT can’t be stressed - it’s always unstressed. When we need to stress it, we replace it with THAT, just like you say вот ЭТО! испытание! We say “Now THAT’S a challenge!”

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

You can also tell that English is her second language because she uses WELL in the wrong places (and too often).

Was this book assigned to you for school, or did you yourself get it for self-study?

Alexsandr Bezsalovpublicó un comentario 5 years ago

Now my brother goes to school in grade 9 and I help him)

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

Aha! Ok. Yes, it means вот это испытание!

Alexsandr Bezsalovpublicó un comentario 5 years ago

we have a lot of mistakes in English books, I notice often

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

Yeah, I noticed too))

Alexsandr Bezsalovpublicó un comentario 5 years ago

although these books are recommended by the Ministry of Education of Ukraine)

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

That’s unfortunate :(

Tatiana Gerasimenkopublicó un comentario 5 years ago

Я думаю, в том контексте That's a challenge! - Это задача не из лёгких! =или= Ничего себе ты замахнулся!/Вот это ты замахнулся!

Tatiana Gerasimenkopublicó un comentario 5 years ago

Джон: Я русский начал учить!
Улий: А я русский, японский и китайский одновременно.
Джон: Ничего себе ты замахнулся!

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

John: I’ve taken up Russian.
Uly: And I’m doing Russian, Japanese and Chinese - all at once.
John: Wow, you’re ambitious - I’ll give you that!

Russ Spublicó un comentario 5 years ago

it's/that's/this - is an ordeal for Russian speakers. The same as THE/A articles. It's all different is Russian, that is why for Uli it's fairly easy to discern unusual patters in an English book that was written by a foreign speaker.

Russ Spublicó un comentario 5 years ago

I've also noticed that a lot foreigners have problem using THE/A. They would either use it incorrectly or not at all.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

And with IT/THAT - as in this example.

Russ Spublicó un comentario 5 years ago

Uli, would you say that "...seen on TV programmes about..." sound odd? I would say something like "There was story on TV about...." Never heard people saying ...seen something on TV programmes about...

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

Are you referring to this post where it says “I’ve heard many stories and seen tv programs about people who changed their lives completely”?

Russ Spublicó un comentario 5 years ago

Yes, in the book, especially where it says "...seen on TV programmes about..." Does it sound right to you?

Russ Spublicó un comentario 5 years ago

Usually people would say ... I've seen/heard on tv... but not on tv programs... right?

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

Actually, I have no problem with that sentence.

Russ Spublicó un comentario 5 years ago

I see, I just never heard people saying I've seen it on tv PROGRAMS.

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

What they said was “I’ve seen tv programs about people who have changed their lives completely.” There’s nothing wrong with that sentence))

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

Russ, are you on VK? You should friend me.

Russ Spublicó un comentario 5 years ago

I'm not. I'm antisocial. No one can bear me more than a few days, hence no friends. )))

⁌ ULY ⁍publicó un comentario 5 years ago

Lord! That’s too bad

Irina Arispublicó un comentario 5 years ago

What a warm community is here 😁 Thank’s Uli for you comments, they are really helpful and inspiring!

Russ, are you a developer? Antisocial is a new normal now 😁
