Спасибо большое!
А можно спросить, есть ли тут ошибки:
I have no room for development
I have no room to develop
I have no room for developing
Thank you in advance🙂
У меня нет места в машине.

Кто-то просит подвезти, а свободных сидений нет или у него много вещей, а места в багажнике нет.

Если речь идет о новом строительстве, лучше использовать space или area вместо room, которое лучше согласуется с абстрактными понятиями- there's room for improvement
Pink, if someone asks you for a ride and you can't accommodate them, you simply say THERE'S NO ROOM FOR YOU IN MY CAR:
Pink, you seem like an intelligent person. My advice to you is to NOT take English advice from people who are themselves still learning English. The translations offered on for this post are the perfect example of how something can be grammatically correct, but NOT IDIOMATIC. For example, let's imagine you and I are both Americans trying to learn Russian. You post THERE'S NO ROOM FOR YOU IN MY CAR and I propose "в машине для тебя нет пространствa" - why not? It's grammatical and it translates your post, no? NO! It's grammatical, but nobody would say it in that situation. It's not IDIOMATIC. Learn English from English speakers! 😉
The problem is that now both those translations have hearts and other Russians may think it's ok to learn them.
👍👍👍
жалоба отправлена!
Ещё одна! Даёшь ЛингвоЛайв, которому можно доверять!
@Uly Marrero, thank you for your answer to my question🙂
1 - I share your point of view regarding idiomatic English, that's why I pretty often post questions about nuances of usage.
2 - I've "cancelled" ❤ for above-mentioned translations -
I hope, the guys who translate this phrase for me aren't going to be offended - it's just for getting good and idiomatic translations.
I'm also very thankful to you for your detailed explanasions -
they are very helpful👍
3 - Пользуясь случаем, I'd like to ask you if these sentences are correct.
(I'm a bit confusing about V(infinitive ) and V(gerund))
Hopefully, there are no mistakes here, but I'm waiting for your approve😀
I have no room for development
I have no room to develop
I have no room for developing
Thank you in advance🙂
You’re very welcome))
It depends on what you mean. What sort of development are you talking about?
Например, идет совещание (meeting) в компании.
Сотрудник хочет сказать, что у него нет возможности развиваться (например, увеличивать продажи, promote the brand или он в принципе перерос свою должность).
То есть - он хочет сообщить, что у него нет возможности развиваться самому или развивать порученную ему сферу.
Мне, кажется это можно сказать 3-мя способами - если говорить о фразе to have no room.
I have no room for development (for + Noun)
I have no room to develop (to + Vinf)
I have no room for developing (for + V-gerund)
Но хотелось бы, чтобы Вы подтвердили, что я написала их правильно.
Еще раз большое спасибо)
Ok, I understand, I just wouldn’t use ROOM in that context. But if I did, I would use NO ROOM FOR DEVELOPMENT in general, NO ROOM TO DEVELOP (SOMETHING) if I mentioned WHAT I couldn’t develop, and I wouldn’t use FOR DEVELOPING at all.
>Ok, I understand, I just wouldn’t use ROOM in that context
А как бы Вы сказали?🤔
I can’t develop...
and I wouldn’t use FOR DEVELOPING at all.
Но почему?...
Такой прекрасный способ показать, что нет возможности для развития как для процесса.
Gerund - это ведь для того, чтобы показать процесс🤔
I just can’t think of anything to suggest here because I’m a bit confused with this whole ROOM FOR ... Can you choose another phrase that isn’t so strange so I can explain it better?
😂
Ну, меня интереcовал именно оборот
to have no room)
Но я уже поняла, что это не самая удачная формулировка?))
Спасибо Вам за помощь)
Из этого следует только одно:
наверно, я просто не понимаю, как упореблять эту фразу с абстрактными понятиями.
Если речь о месте в машине - все понятно
Но еще это оборот (вроде бы) переводится как "иметь возможность".
И я думала, что с абстрактными понятиями - напр, development - его вполне можно использовать😔
(NO) ROOM FOR is normally used to talk about the possibility of improving something. If you have a product that you have developed to the point that it can’t be improved any further, you can say THERE’S NO ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT. Or to give you another example, if a student turns in a writing assignment, the teacher can remark “Your writing is much better than it was last semester, but there’s still ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.” You cannot say ROOM FOR IMPROVING but you can say ROOM TO IMPROVE (although it doesn’t sound as good as room for IMPROVEMENT).
Okay, It seems to me I'm starting to understand.
We should get the word "room" as a "scope" (scope for improvement)
But the word "improvement" is too general, we need more specific word for it - for instance: to increase, to grow, to expand.
So,
I have a room to increase the price/grow the brand/expand full powers -
it should be idiomatic and moreover, logical.
Am I right?
You can also say ROOM FOR GROWTH/EXPANSION
The only part this isn’t idiomatic is I HAVE NO room...
There's little/no room for doubt that this discussion is both interesting and useful. 👍😉
Exactly!
Aha
According to Cambridge:
"to have no smth" mostly used for behavior or feelings:
If you say there is no room for a feeling or type of behaviour, you mean it is not acceptable:
In a small company like this, there is no room for laziness.
=>
So actually it's not about improment.
So, my conclusion is:
*If we are talking about improvement -
Affirmative:
I have room to increase prices
Negative:
I can't increase prices
* If we are talking about feelings and behavior
Affirmative:
I have room for comparisson - nonsense
Negative
I have no room for comparisson - it's correct
Я правильно рассуждаю?
Again, I don’t like “I have (no) room” - I would say “There’s (no) room for me to improve this” but “I have no room to improve this” doesn’t sound right.
А, в этом дело)
Поняла🙂
СПАСИБО!
всегда пожалуйста!)))
No room to rhumba in a sports car
You can't move forward or back
There's no room to do what the beat tells you to
Without throwing your spine outta wack.
They call you lady luck
But there is room for doubt
At times you have a very un-lady-like way
Of running out
Thank you, Alex)
I've got it👍
