¿Cómo traducir? (en-ru)

Sam had left before Ann got there. or Sam left before Ann got there. Which sentence is more correct?

Traducciones de usuarios (1)

  1. 1.

    They're both correct. See below...

    El comentario del traductor

They're both correct. The simple past is used to state what happened plainly, sequentially: "Sam and Ann agreed to meet in the library and discuss the matter privately. But Sam left before and Ann got there and never found out what really happened." (Сэм ушел И не узнал...) The perfect is used to EXPLAIN something, to give a REASON for an outcome: "Sam and Ann agreed to meet in the library and discuss the matter privately. But Sam had left before Ann got there, so he never found what really happened." (Сэм уже ушел, ПОЭТОМУ не узнал...)

Yasir,a past simple вообще здесь не проходит?

a bpublicó un comentario 7 years ago

Если бы они пришли одновременно, то подошло бы, но одно действие произошло раньше, оттого past perfect.

МА пpublicó un comentario 7 years ago

Я тоже склоняюсь к past perfect,это логично,вот только правило насчёт очередности действий смущает.Спасибо,Yasir

Fang rushed [simple past tense] out to buy Ms Beebs a Jaguar because he realized [simple past tense] that he had forgotten [past perfect tense] her birthday. [The past perfect had forgotten, indicates that the “forgetting” occurred earlier than the “realizing.”] отсюда http://www.grammar-once-and-for-all.com/correctness/sequence-of-tenses/

Убедительно,спасибо за примеры,Улий.А то правило в учебнике Афанасьевой очень сухое,нет ясности.Спасибо обоим за внимание!

На Grammarly хорошо объясняется разница между Past Simple и Past Perfect на таком примере:

"We were shocked to discover that someone had graffitied “Tootles was here” on our front door. We were relieved that Tootles had used washable paint."

Consider the difference between these two sentences:

1. We were relieved that Tootles USED washable paint.
2. We were relieved that Tootles HAD USED washable paint.

It’s a subtle difference, but the first sentence doesn’t tie Tootles’s act of using washable paint to any particular moment in time; readers might interpret it as “We were relieved that Tootles was in the habit of using washable paint.” In the second sentence, the past perfect makes it clear that you’re talking about a specific instance of using washable paint.

Пост целиком здесь (если открывается заставка Grammarly, надо внизу нажать Go to Blog Post):

А я то думала, что Past Perfect выражает предшествование, не более того. 😶

Ну да, но в большинстве случаев это является предисторией в качестве объяснения, т.е. чтобы читателю стало понятно, что случи/алось перед прошлым событием, соответственно почему кто-то находилось в какой-то ситуации. "When strange things started happening around the house, nobody paid much attention and life continued as normal... until things went from strange to unbearable. On one horrifying occasion, one of the children was almost pushed down the stairs by an unseen entity. At that point, they decided to bring in their childhood friend, Hal. He had been a priest before giving up the clergy for his present wife and actually had considerable experience with the paranormal." Вот в этом ситуации можно было просто сказать "he was a priest before giving up the clergy", но тогда теряешь этот оттенок причины, эту значимость - что как раз поэтому его и призвали. Короче, вот в этом примере "he was a priest" - простой факт, но вот "he had been a priest" весомый аргумент. (excuse my mistakes)

Сегодня впервые слышу о такой функции past perfect. Круто! 👍👍

No mistakes other than в этоЙ ситуации. I guess it was a typo. 👍
