Sorry vicious circle, MAKING GOOD OF MYSELF doesn't mean anything.

grumbleradded a comment 8 лет назад

Yet again I am making my way to... ?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8

how about, "once again I'm on my way to becoming…" -or- "I'm back on my way to becoming…" ?

grumbleradded a comment 8 лет назад

back - no
I am on my way to - sounds like you just started and is pretty far
In fact "*И* я снова выбиваюсь *!*" means "I've just become" despite looking like present continuous.

grumbleradded a comment 8 лет назад

I am back to being an A-pupil?

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8

an A student

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8

Yes , that sounds good to me.

grumbleradded a comment 8 лет назад

"отличник" - это обычно в школе.
"student" for me is more like a university/college, but I can be wrong.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8

I think that distinction only exists in Russian. We call kids in elementary school "good students" too.

grumbleradded a comment 8 лет назад

" In fact "*И* я снова выбиваюсь *!*" means "I've just become" despite looking like present continuous. "

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8

I'm not officially an A student, but I'm well on my way to becoming one again in the near future."

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8

Or is this an announcement like "And here I am back at the top of the class!"

grumbleradded a comment 8 лет назад

grumbleradded a comment 8 лет назад

generally, "back at the top" doesn't necessarily mean all As.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8

When your at the top of the class, you're an A student.

grumbleradded a comment 8 лет назад

Another example
"И, он вырывается вперед..." (прямая трансляция с соревновани по бегу) - означает что он только что вырваля вперед.

Аналогично он забивает гол..." - похоже на continuous, но на самом деле perfect. Думаю, в английском тоже такое встречается.

grumbleradded a comment 8 лет назад

Well, if all other students are bad, one can be on the top with all Bs or a mix of As and Bs. When I was at school not all classes had straight A students. Those that had them, typically had just 1-3 of them.

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8

And he breaks out ahead!"

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8

...and those 1-3 were at the top of the class)

grumbleradded a comment 8 лет назад

Yes, but in some classes A+B were "at the top", but they weren't "отличники"

grumbleradded a comment 8 лет назад

My point is that
"straight A" = "отличник"
"top of the class" isn't necessarily "straight A"

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 8

And I break out ahead again?
