Свободное время лучше переводить как spare time

Jane Leshadded a comment 8 лет назад

Елена не this days, а these days

Jane Leshadded a comment 8 лет назад

This - это (ед.ч), these - эти (мн.ч).

Jane Leshadded a comment 8 лет назад

Yefim, по-моему вернее I'm lack of time. Без in. Или я просто чего-то не знаю?

Yefim Yasnogorskyadded a comment 8 лет назад

no,only in lack of time, americans use this form

⁌ ULY ⁍added a comment 8 лет назад

Джейн, ты права: I'm in lack of time никто не скажет. Мы американцы (как и другие англоговорящие люди) используем фразу FOR LACK OF TIME, когда это является причиной, по которой мы не успеем сделать что-нибудь, потому что у нас нет достаточно времени: "I have his number, I just haven't called him for lack of time."

I'm in lack of time now

IN LACK OF TIME is not idiomatic - nobody says this.

Спасибо Uly! Can I ask a question? I noticed your translated the Russian variant like "I have very little free time". So "free time" is a correct variant, it's just that I always thought only "spare time" is used in this meaning.

From an American point of view, free time is time away from work, which you may dedicate to your children, to hobbies, to sports, etc. Any time outside of work time and free time, is spare time. It's time during which you're not obligated to anybody or anything. I don't know if there's a difference in Russian between свободное время и лишнее время.

Jane Leshadded a comment 8 лет назад

That's interesting, thank you. In Russian I guess these two phrases would be translated as "свободное время" and no matter for what: for hobbies, family etc., or just for yourself... We will say: 1) У меня есть свободное время, я поиграю с детьми/погуляю с собакой и так далее. 2) Отлично, сегодня выходной, а дети у бабушки. Так что у меня много свободного времени для себя любимой. In both variants it's just "свободное время".

As for "лишнее время" I believe it's the same "свободное время". We say меня есть немного свободного/лишнего времени сегодня вечером, так что я помогу вам с переездом". In fact, both mean that it's a period of time when are not obliged to do anything.

The same in English, we usually use spare time when we refer to free time that we are willing to offer somebody else.

Yefim Yasnogorskyadded a comment 8 лет назад

all the sentences below help you to say you don't have enough /have no more time:

- I have no more time to go over the text.
- no more time left to do the exercise.
- I am in lack of time.
- I am running short of time
- Due to lack of time i will skip this test.

I agree with all of them except "i'm in lack of time." I've never heard or read that in my life.

You can't believe everything you read in a dictionary.

Ive never heard anything like лишнее время with this meaning. Only as in Я не буду это делать! Что у меня, время лишнее что-ли!

Tatiana Gerasimenkoadded a comment 8 лет назад

As for me, saying лишнее время is the way to say: time can't be a thing to waste.
